Award-winning Mater Dolorosa Necklace

Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows)

1st Place Precious Metals Traditional Spanish Market 2018 Santa Fe, New Mexico

In today’s world of the Me Too Movement I’ve been moved and inspired be the courage and strength of the women standing up for others and themselves. I thought of other strong female figures in history and writings and I kept coming back to Mary. Many of us come back to Mary, I thought to myself. We pray to her for strength and wisdom and forgiveness. This piece is dedicated to Mary and all those women fighting for their equal place on earth. Our sorrows are nothing compared to hers yet she is there for us.
Our Lady of Sorrows (Latin: Beata Maria Virgo Perdolens), Our Lady of Dolours, the Sorrowful Mother or Mother of Sorrows (Latin: Mater Dolorosa), and Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows or Our Lady of the Seven Dolours are names by which the Virgin Mary is referred to in relation to sorrows in her life.

Hand forged Repoussé, method of decorating the sterling silver in which parts of the design are raised in relief from the back or the inside of the article by means of hammers and punches; definition and detail is then be added from the front by chasing and stamping designs. Same method of repousse is used in creating each silver bead to a perfect half dome and then mating to together with a seamless solder joint. The pearl beads were hand selected from hundreds to best match in size and color. The rosarita heart was a section I found in the center of a one-pound nugget that was careful cut to show that beautiful swirls of darker red through the center. The heart is pegged and attached in the rear to look like it is floating on the sterling silver heart. The rosarita flame was also selected and cut from a larger nugget specifically for that yellow streak you’ll see in the center. The flames are attached with pegs as well. The sterling silver swivel bail was hand made so the piece can be worn on either side. The necklace is strung on foxtail, which is a woven metal chain for timeless durability.
